See, I think this is something pretty much all Sam haters don’t understand about him. When he went to Stanford it wasn’t because he hated John and it sure as fuck wasn’t because he didn’t love Dean. It wasn’t selfish. He wasn’t abandoning his family. He wanted to stay in contact with them, but then John pulled that line and the rest is history.
Let me tell you something. You think we’re exaggerating when we say hunting was killing Sam, but we’re not. The “family business” was poison to him. Sam was always kinder, gentler, more understanding, more willing to trust and love. That’s who he is and hunting was taking that away. He was forced into this life he hated, always moving around, always murdering things, always wondering if you or someone you loved was next. And he never got a say. Sure, he came back after Jess, died, but the thing is, that was his choice. He had to accept hunting on his own terms. He had to choose that path himself.
If he had listened to John and stayed, or never tried to leave in the first place, he would not be the Sam we know now. He needed those four years to establish a significant relationship outside of his narrow world and develop a solid identity for himself. Because think about it, what role did he play in the family? John was a protector, Dean was a protector. They understood each other, they were secure in their positions. But what was Sam? The protected? That’s not much of a role at all, is it. That’s not much of anything. How could anyone live their entire life feeling as though they were only something to be taken care of, never equal, never standing side-by-side with the others, always the burden, dragging down the people you love? You can’t. You just can’t. He loves John and Dean with all his heart and they love him back, but they loved him so much they didn’t realize they were smothering him with it.
If Sam hadn’t gone to Stanford he would be a shell of who he is now. Colder and quieter and more jaded and less loving. And that would truly be heartbreaking.
I don’t think I’ve ever read a more eloquent analysis of Sam Winchester. Gorgeous.
Are you all not getting its a spoof off a 1990 movie called Misery where a famous writer is kidnapped by his crazy fan.
Obviously its not the same exact story line, but they have to change it due to copyrights. But tons of shows have made fun of that movie and while the producers and writers might possibly also be making fun of some of the fan base; I think they were also poking fun at the movie Misery..
just sayin’.
